How the Bomb Shell Works

Every model follows this proven 5-stage testing cycle. Higher models simply run multiple cycles in parallel.

1

Load & Position

Operator places shells horizontally on the infeed conveyor using the jib crane. The 6-axis robot (ABB/KUKA/FANUC, 150 kg payload) picks each shell and positions it vertically on the 4-station rotary index table.

  • VFD gear motor-driven roller conveyor
  • Robot with hydraulic gripper for secure handling
  • Automatic shell identification and recipe selection
2

Fill & Measure Cavity Volume

The shell cavity is automatically filled with filtered water mixed with a rust-inhibiting compound. A high flow rate fills the bulk volume, then switches to a precision low flow as the level approaches the eye face. The exact equivalent water capacity is measured and recorded.

  • Dual-rate filling: high-speed bulk + precision top-off
  • Volume accuracy: ±1% (≤9 mL total uncertainty)
  • Resolution: ≤1 mL via volumetric flow meter
  • Capacity compliance check (upper/lower thresholds)
3

Seal & Pressurize

The rotary table indexes 90° to the testing station. The 100-tonne hydraulic press pushes the shell against the sealing head. Air is purged, then dual hydraulic intensifiers ramp pressure up to the programmed setpoint (up to 1400 bar) with continuous monitoring throughout the dwell period.

  • Operating pressure: 250 – 1400 bar
  • Structural capacity: 1800 bar (1.5× safety factor)
  • Hold time: 5 – 60 seconds (programmable)
  • Pressure resolution: ≤1 bar, accuracy: ±2% / ±10 bar
  • Continuous pressure/time data acquisition at 250ms
4

Measure Deformation & Record

LVDT probes (Marposs/Renishaw) measure the shell's maximum expansion during pressurization and permanent deformation after depressurization. All data is automatically logged, and the shell is classified as pass or reject.

  • Resolution: 1 micron (LVDT / infrared non-contact)
  • Measures expansion during hold & deformation post-release
  • Automatic pass/fail classification with buzzer alert
  • Pressure vs. time curve recorded as CSV
  • Data acquisition frequency: 250 ms
5

Dewater, Stamp & Unload

The rotary table indexes to the dewatering station. A servo mechanism tilts the shell 45° to drain water into the collecting tray. Passed shells are stamped with an "H" mark, then the robot places them on the outfeed conveyor. Rejected shells are diverted to the rejection table automatically.

  • Servo motor tilt mechanism for complete drainage
  • Optional integrated drying (internal + external)
  • Micro-percussion / cold stamp marking ("H")
  • Automatic pass/reject sorting
  • Operator unloads from outfeed via jib crane

Common Questions

How do I choose the right Bomb Shell model?
Choose based on throughput. BS-30 suits R&D and low-volume (≤30/hr). BS-60 is the standard fully-automatic (~60/hr). BS-120 doubles capacity with dual test stations for large facilities. BS-200 is a full production line. Use our configurator above to get a recommendation based on your specific shell types and requirements.
What is the maximum test pressure?
All models operate from 250 to 1400 bar and are structurally rated to 1800 bar (1.5× safety factor). Dwell time is programmable from 5 to 60 seconds. For applications with longer hold times (45s+), we recommend dual-station models (BS-120 or BS-200) to maintain throughput.
What shell sizes and calibers are supported?
All models support 105, 120, 122, 130, 152, and 155 mm calibers. Shells from 100–200 mm outer diameter and 300–1000 mm length are accommodated. Each shell type requires its own sealing head and location cups — we fabricate these from your drawings and a sample shell.
Can it integrate with our existing production line?
Yes. BS-60 and above include SCADA with synchronization capability. BS-120/200 offer optional MES integration for direct data transfer to centralized control systems. The machine supports both standalone and line-integrated operation.
What does commissioning include?
End-to-end: design, fabrication, foundation, installation, programming, commissioning, and 3–4 days operator training. Minimum 1000-component proving trials per shell type. Five operation/maintenance/safety manuals, hydraulic circuit diagrams, and dimensional drawings included.
What about spare parts and support?
Two sets of spare seals, backup valves, and a 150-piece service toolkit included. All components use global standard brands (Siemens, ABB, Rexroth, Wika, Marposs) for worldwide availability. Long-term service commitments available.
